Carrying your Backpack
Walking around with thirty-plus extra pounds (15 kgs) on you, especially for long distances, will take its toll on your body. You should already have selected a pack that conforms to your body, has good lumbar support and thick padded straps. To prevent injury and for general comfort, do the following:
- The weight in your pack should be evenly distributed, with the heavier items on top to reduce strain to your lower back.
- Carry with your boots on. You'll need the ankle support, and your bag will be lighter without your boots in it.

Trains
Get on board early and stake your territory. Watch out for the smoking section (that is if smoke bothers you), and sit in the middle of the car far from the toilets and door noises.

Buses
I’ve found that few buses provide for any real comfort. They’re cramped and often without toilets. But, that's why they're so cheap. Many "air-con" buses (tourist buses with air conditioning) can be like meat lockers. Few have vent controls, so everyone on the bus is subject to the driver’s personal preference, which is usually too cold even for a Swede. Bring your jacket on board, and perhaps your sleeping bag, too.
