Connect with Others
Once you begin the process of preparing for your travels, it’s a good idea to network with as many experienced travelers as possible.  Besides benefiting from their travel experiences, veteran travelers often times have connections/friends in other countries. Friends who may be able to house you for a period of time—often free of charge—and who just might show you their town in ways the average tourist would miss-out on otherwise. Travelers have a tendency to offer their homes to other travelers, even when they are perfect strangers. Of course, always use your sound judgment when directed to, or offered, free/special accommodations. But it works and it's a great way to immerse yourself in other cultures.
