| Precautions
If you are planning to take children abroad, it's important that they know what you know about local laws, safety and customs. Be sure to prepare them well in advance for the differences they will encounter, like foreign languages, symbols and signs. Here are some common sense issues to discuss with your children before leaving home.
- Make sure they have the name and address of the place they are staying, along with some sort of I.D. card. (Be sure their names are not visible to the general public.) Get business cards if you are staying at a hotel.
- Include with your child’s address of where they are staying a small list of essential phrases in the local language for them to consult if needed (ie. “Please help me,” “Do you speak English?” “Please take me to the [US] Embassy”)
- Show your children how to use the local phone.

Adjusting
Set the stage with children before the trip begins. You and your kids should share with one another what you have learned about the country you are going to visit. Keep the discussions casual, and let them feel that they are not just kids but thoughtful and disciplined soon-to-be travelers.
